Plumbers are experts at water flow throughout your home. They deal with fixtures on a daily basis that provide us with water whenever we flush, turn on a tap, or use our water based appliances. Just shut your water off some day and you’ll see how important water is in our everyday lives pretty fast!

Plumbing Fixtures

A fixture refers to anything in a home that has water flowing to it. A toilet, a sink, a hot water tank, a dishwasher, a bathtub; these are all examples of plumbing fixtures. Plumbers know the importance of keeping our fixtures operating like they should. Blockages, clogs, back flow issues and drainage are all things that a plumber works at fixing on a daily basis. Water not moving around as it should poses problems in all areas of a home. Having an issue with water leaving your home can be disastrous as water finds its own level and will back up and possibly spill out, causing a major mess and potentially a lot of damage. Water not going into your home properly causes problems within the pipes and then in turn within the appliances and fixtures that use that water to operate.

The Concept of Plumbing

Plumbing is really dealing with the water flow in, around and out of your home. Water comes into a home through the mains that are usually built under the roads in your neighborhood. The mains are large pipes that carry vast amounts of water in them at all times. All water in the mains is cold, as water is only heated when it arrives in your home. From the mains the water travels in your home via copper piping that is located within your walls and floors. Some water is redirected to your hot water tank where it is stored and heated before heading out in other pipes that feed fixtures requiring hot water, such as your bathtub or kitchen sink. For the fixtures that do not need hot water, the cold simply feeds to them directly from the mains.

Every time you flush the toilet or drain a sink, the water will go to the sewer via the drain pipe. These pipes are large in diameter to accommodate all of the waste water that is accumulated. They flow down and out of your house and feed directly to a sewer line, also located in your neighborhood. Keeping all of the water coming in, flowing around freely and leaving your home properly is what a plumber does, every day.
